About Our Temple
The personnel from the Jasin government department initiated the establishment of a small temple in their residential area, choosing to worship Shiva as the primary deity responsible for creation, protection, and destruction. While neighboring temples focused on Amman, the main purpose behind the construction of this temple remains unknown. In 1960, the Malacca Government repurposed the Indian labour quarters for the construction of a Tamil school, government offices, and civil servant quarters. The Indian residents, who had migrated to the new village of Jasin in the 18th century, saw the relocation of the Nathanar Shiva Temple to its current location at Lot 1577, Jalan Besar Jasin, in 1965. The individuals instrumental in securing government land for the temple were employees of the Department of Public Works and Justice. Initially, a simple temple made of boards and zinc was erected beneath the shade of a prominent royal tree. The consecration of the limestone Shiva Lingam drew an increasing number of devotees, especially for performing rites for the deceased, attracting visitors from various places. The temple underwent slight expansions in 1990 and 2003 to accommodate the growing demand. In response to continued demand, the present temple building was constructed in 2017. However, recognizing the need for a more comprehensive solution, the temple management plans to relocate the Shiva temple and integrate it with the Srimaha Mariamman temple to create a proper Shiva temple. The envisioned temple aims to provide facilities such as a multi-purpose hall, educational spaces, toilets, parking, workshops, and more. The temple management envisions this development as the foundation for the social and religious progress of the Indian community in the future.
