About Our Temple
The Hindu Temple In Sibu Is Known Today As The Sri Maha Mariamman Temple Began Around 1920 As A Very Humble Place Of Worship. Initially, It Was Little More Than A Small Hut Built By Early Indian Settlers Who Came To Sibu (Then A Growing Town Along The Rajang River) For Work And Community Life.
At That Time, The Local Hindu Population Was Small And Lacked A Formal Temple, So This Modest Hut Became The Centre For Religious Prayers, Cultural Traditions, And Community Gatherings For The Hindu Residents.
In 1971, The Original Hut Was Replaced By A Double-Storey Building, A Structure Donated By The Late Mr. Somasundram, Which Served As A More Permanent Temple For The Community. This Building Became The Central Place Of Worship For Hindus Around Sibu, Providing A Space For Regular Prayers And Festivals.
Over The Years, The Temple Community Dreamed Of A More Traditional And Architecturally Significant Hindu Temple One That Reflected The Religious Heritage Seen In Peninsular Malaysia Or India. Funds Were Raised Over Many Years, Involving Donations From Community Members, Support From Local Philanthropists, And Assistance From The Sarawak Government’s Unit For Other Religions (Unifor).
Between 2018 And 2024, Major Construction And Decorative Work Were Completed, Culminating In A New Sri Maha Mariamman Temple Building. This Newer Temple Cost Around Rm2 Million And Features Traditional Hindu Architectural Elements, Statues, And Design Motifs That Align With Classic Mariamman Temples Found Elsewhere. Efforts Taken By President Mr. Manogaran Krishnasamy.
The Temple Was Officially Consecrated (Kumbabishegam) Around July 2025 In A Ceremony That Included Over 30 Priests And 48 Days Of Prayer, Making It A Significant Event Not Just For Local Hindus But Also Visitors From Other Parts Of Malaysia And Beyond.
