About Our Temple
The Sri Maha Mariamman Temple stands as a prominent symbol of faith and heritage for the Tamil community in Malaysia. Its origins trace back to 1875 when the late Kayarohanam Pillai, father of Mr.Thamboosamy Pillai, established the temple as a religious charity. Initially constructed using wooden planks with a simple roof, a small stone structure was later added in 1888 to accommodate the growing number of worshippers. As the Tamil population continued to expand, the existing structure was deemed inadequate. The temple management board, recognizing the need for a larger space, decided to reconstruct the temple. The result was the erection of a grand new temple featuring an 85-foot tall Rajagopuram (gateway tower), making it a significant architectural and spiritual landmark. Meanwhile, Mr. Thamboosamy Pillai, renowned for founding the Batu Caves Murugan Temple, played a pivotal role in expanding the religious landscape of Kuala Lumpur. With the approval of the Sultan of Selangor, he initiated the construction of a Mariamman temple in Jalan Bandar to serve the local Tamil community. The Sultan not only endorsed the plan but also allocated the land specifically for the Indian community. Mr. Thamboosamy Pillai and his family later became the custodians of the Sri Mariamman Temple in Jalan Bandar. With the support of public contributions and benefactors, he spearheaded the construction of a new temple, culminating in a grand Kumbabishekam (consecration ceremony) in 1954. Today, the Sri Maha Mariamman Temple is duly registered and continues to thrive under the management of the Batu Caves Murugan Temple. It remains a vital place of worship where pujas and festivals are celebrated with deep devotion, serving as a cornerstone of faith for Tamil devotees across the region.

The architecture of this temple that stands out is the impressive Gopuram (5-storey tower). The height of the Gopuram is 22.9 meters which was carved by an experienced craftsman from India. This temple resembles the shape of a human body lying on its back with the head facing west and the feet facing east. In addition, this temple also has a statue of the 66 Nayanmargal Gods.
