About Our Temple
The Sri Maha Mariamman Temple was built in 1930 in the Belemang Sagil estate. The people living in this estate established the temple for their worship. When the temple was first built, a large Vinayagar statue was placed under a 150-year-old tree. There is a pond within the temple premises, and devotees believe that the pond serves as a source of rain, with Ambaal residing there. In 1957, the British estate manager, Colonel Kettle, ordered waste to be dumped into the pond. The estate residents approached Colonel Kettle and requested him to revoke the order, explaining the significance of the pond. However, he stood firm on his decision. Shortly afterward, he became seriously ill, and all efforts to cure him failed. He eventually died in London. Due to this event, the estate management has never cleaned the pond. Currently, the temple management has properly registered the temple and maintains it. All prayers and festivals are celebrated with great devotion and in a well-organized manner.
