About Our Temple
The Sri Maha Mariamman Temple is believed to have been established in 1900 by estate workers who were brought from India. Initially, the workers worshipped Lord Muniswaran. To honor Lord Muniswaran, they would often offer goats and chickens in sacrifice. The first shrines were dedicated to Maha Mariamman, Murugan, and Muthappan, and each of these was built separately. This arrangement helped foster friendships among Tamil, Malayalam, and Telugu-speaking workers. However, during the Taipusam festival, the Malayali workers would avoid the Murugan temple, and similarly, during the Onam festival, other ethnic groups would not participate in the celebrations. The British suggested to the Hindus that both the Mariamman and Murugan temples be integrated into one. As a result, the temple was transformed into a single complex housing all the deities—Maha Mariamman, Murugan, Vinayagar, Muthappan, Muniswaran, and Kaliamman. The temple is now officially registered as Sri Maha Mariamman Temple and continues to function successfully. The Taipusam and Onam festivals are celebrated with great enthusiasm and remain the most important religious events at the temple.

This temple is the only one that has Dewa Manmathan Rathi (the God of Love). Many lovers who are in love visit and worship this deity to get blessings. Family couples who are in conflict can also be united, and the marriage is conducted with the blessing of both sides of the family, which is believed to happen with the blessing of God, Manmathan Rathi. The British tried to demolish this temple but were unsuccessful. There has been a celebration of the Manmathan Rathi festival in this temple till now.
