About Our Temple

The attempt by the local community to construct their own temple near the city of Melaka went unrecognized by the colonial government, as there was already an existing Hindu temple in the city. Consequently, they established their temple outside the city, which included the Jeevasamadhi (holy tomb) of a Hindu saint, dating back to 1868, who meditated on a Shiva lingam, giving the place the name Channasillai. The site, situated on a hill, is owned by Kutupambam of the Nathukottai Chettiar community. The monks residing there, known for their worship and rescue activities, caught the attention of the Chettiars. Recognizing the spiritual power of the location, the Chettiars decided to demolish the area at the foot of the hill and construct a temple. This temple became a place of worship for Hindus in the region. The monks persuaded the Natukottai Chettiar community to build a Murugan temple at the site, promising that all the divine energy and auspiciousness of the location would be channeled into the temple. Land was acquired for the temple, and due to the Chettiar community's ownership of most farms in the area, Hindu laborers were engaged in the construction. Between 1868 and 1872, the saint at the center of this religious site provided various services, including healing, to local residents before attaining moksha. In the 1900s, a grand-scale festival began being celebrated in the month of Masi, drawing over 100,000 devotees from across the country.
