About Our Temple
In 1924, Mr. Krishnar, the grandfather of Mr. Sukumaran Rajendran, who currently leads the temple, constructed the Thirunamam Sri Yoga Gayatri Temple at the Kanjo Minjnaga estate. Later, the temple was renamed Sri Maha Mariamman Temple. In 2004, Mr. Rajendran proposed the construction of a new tower for the temple. With the support of Malaysian Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr. S. Subramaniam, Datuk Sri Major Shekhar Govindaswamy, and the temple management, a new temple was built on land donated by a person of Chinese descent. The temple was named "Sri Maha Mariamman Muniyandi Temple," commonly referred to as "Mettukuil" by Hindus due to its location on a small hill. Another name for the temple is the "Military Temple" as it is frequently visited by soldiers from the Sungai Udang Army Camp. Oracle reading events are conducted every Sunday by Mr. Sukumaran Rajendran. Since 1979, the temple festival has been held on the first Monday of May. Additionally, a special religious event called Uthra Omam takes place on the last weekend of April. The temple has been managed by descendants of Mr. Sukumaran for the past three generations.
