About Our Temple
In the 1980s, Mr. Thamboosamy Pillai was a prominent leader and entrepreneur of the Indian community in Malaya. He was the founder of the Sri Maha Mariamman Temple in Kuala Lumpur. His father, Mr. Kayarohanam Pillai, had a dream in which Goddess Parvati instructed him to build a temple for his son, Skandan. He, along with other key Indian community leaders led by Mr. Kayarohanam, formed an association. In 1888, while searching for a suitable location to build a temple for Lord Murugan, they discovered the cave at the current site of the Batu Caves temple. The cave and hill were later cleansed and the Batu Caves Murugan Temple was established on top of the hill in honor of Lord Kumaran. In the early days, the temple began with the installation of a Vel (spear) and was known as the Subramaniar Temple. Since then, Batu Caves has transformed into a holy site for Hindus and a major center for Murugan worship. Currently, under the leadership of Tan Sri Dato’ Nadarajah, the temple has seen various advancements and is functioning excellently. The current statue of Lord Murugan standing 140 feet tall is one of the most renowned and tallest Murugan statues in the world. Spanning across countries and religions, it has become a significant tourist destination. It would not be an exaggeration to say that it has become a symbol of identity for the Tamil community in Malaysia.
